North of Santa Rosa you will find Sonoma County’s newest city, Windsor. It actually has roots going back to 1855, but was only incorporated in 1992. Early settler Hiram Lewis gave it the name Windsor because it reminded him of the wide-open English countryside surrounding Windsor Castle.

The Windsor Historical Society opened its museum last year in the Hembree House, a restored former doctor’s home built in 1931. Now called the Hembree House Cultural Center, the Windsor Historical Society shares space with the Windsor Arts Council and its gallery.

These days, the Town Green Village of Old Downtown Windsor holds court over the expansive outdoor plaza and park. Stroll the retail shops, dine and wine taste to your heart’s desire. Summertime brings two weekly farmers’ markets to the Town Green—Sunday mornings and Thursday evenings—plus weekly outdoor music performances and family film showings. The Windsor Golf Club is one of Sonoma County’s best, with a wonderful restaurant looking out over a lake.
